More than 400,000 racing enthusiasts descend on Keeneland every April and October for world-class live racing. In 2004, Keeneland distributed nearly $20 million in racing purses — making its race meets among the richest in North America.

Keeneland’s spring race meeting is widely considered the premier stepping stone for the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks, while Keeneland’s October race meeting is the last major prep for the prestigious Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships.

Keeneland sales grossed more than $675 million in 2004. Its September Yearling Sale and November Breeding Stock Sale are the largest sales in the world of their kind. Keeneland’s 2004 September Yearling Sale grossed a world record $324,904,300 for 3,370 horses. At that sale, a Storm Cat yearling colt fetched a sale record $8 million. Recent top sales graduates include War Emblem, winner of the 2002 Kentucky Derby; Azeri, 2002 Horse of the year and two-time Champion Older Female horse. At both the 2003 and 2004 Breeders’ Cup, five Breeders’ Cup winners were Keeneland sales graduates.

Through the years, sixteen sales graduates have gone on to win the Kentucky Derby, and 25 went on to win the Preakness and Belmont stakes.

In 2004, Keeneland contributed more than $860,000 to local and industry-related charitable programs. through the years, Keeneland has given more than $12 million to various charitable programs.
